Care for a linen shirt, from label to hanger
Do not choose heat or a drying method from the word linen alone. Read the garment's instructions, inspect it before washing and keep a short care record.

The garment label comes before the fibre name
Blends, dyes, finishes, buttons and interlinings can change how a linen shirt should be treated. Read washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional-care instructions in order. GINETEX explains that the number in a wash tub is a maximum temperature and bars indicate gentler processing. If a label is unreadable, ask the supplier rather than substituting a general rule about linen.
Inspect stains and fittings before washing
Check the collar, inner cuffs and front, empty pockets and identify removable parts. Understand a stain and an appropriate treatment before applying a strong product or rubbing one spot aggressively. Consider rough zips or hardware in the rest of the load as well as colours. The question is what will happen to this shirt during washing, not simply how much can fit into the machine.
Washing permission is not dryer permission
Read the drying instruction separately. A wash programme involves mechanical action and spin settings as well as temperature. Record a suitable programme once you have checked the garment and appliance guidance, and arrange to take the shirt out rather than leaving it crumpled wet for a long time. This article does not prescribe one load size, temperature or spin time for every shirt.
Support the shape without stretching it
Within the permitted drying method, gently arrange the collar, placket and sleeves. Consider how a wet garment's shoulders are supported; a thin hanger is not automatically appropriate. Follow an instruction to dry flat where given. Do not assume prolonged strong sunlight improves the result, or pull a wet shirt forcefully to recover its original dimensions.
Read the ironing setting instead of guessing
GINETEX advises choosing ironing temperature from the label rather than fibre content alone. Check permitted heat and steam before using a machine's linen preset. Follow the product's instructions for sensitive finishes and test cautiously in an unobtrusive area where appropriate. You can choose how much everyday texture you enjoy without trying to remove every crease at the expense of the garment.
Store it dry and leave a note for next season
Check that the shirt is completely dry before storage. Separate garments needing cleaning from those ready to wear, and avoid a hanger or crowded rail that distorts the shoulders. Note what worked alongside the care instructions for next year. These are practical organizing suggestions; the product's requirements remain the authority.
