A city-walk planner — walk, pause and stay a little
Build a half-day around one destination, a pause and a comfortable way home.
This is a planning template to adapt to your neighbourhood and schedule, rather than an on-site verified route.
01 / MAKE ROOM
Begin with the time you have
Decide how much time you have before choosing places. Count the journey from your starting point and the return trip. A long journey can make one destination a better choice than several stops.
Write down your starting point, where you need to finish, how you will travel and a comfortable walking pace. With company, agree that either person can ask for a break. On your own, choose a return time in advance.
Divide a comfortable budget between transport, admission, food or drinks and a little flexibility. There is no target amount: the point is to set a limit that suits your day.
02 / MAKE ROOM
Choose one place to anchor the day
Choose the exhibition, bookshop, park or café where you most want to spend time. Let any other stops fit around the way there or back. A good walk does not need a long list of destinations.
Check opening hours, closures, reservations and admission conditions on the venue’s official website or operator’s channel. Note where and when you checked so you can look again before leaving. A map listing alone does not guarantee that a place will be open.
03 / MAKE ROOM
Give the route three parts
Make the first part the journey to your main stop, the second a meal or pause, and the third the journey home or onward. Check estimated travel times on a map, then add a separate margin. Finding your way and waiting also take time.
Choose somewhere to pause before you start, without making a particular seat essential to the day. If you have a connection or appointment, work backwards from that fixed time.
04 / MAKE ROOM
Keep a smaller alternative
If rain, heat or cold makes outdoor time uncomfortable, shorten the plan to one indoor stop whose details you can check. Leaving later or staying close to home are valid alternatives too.
Set a limit on how long you are willing to wait. Check any alternative venue’s information as well, and consider whether simply removing a stop is enough.
If someone is not drinking alcohol, check for water or alcohol-free choices in advance. A drink is optional; a comfortable way home comes first.
My half-day plan
This is a blank plan to fill in by hand after printing. The example row is not a schedule or a service offered by any place. No personal plans are entered or stored on this site.
| Time | Plan | Travel / pause | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example · before leaving | Check the main venue’s official information | Add your own travel margin | Hours and reservation requirements |
| Time 1 | Plan 1 | Travel / pause 1 | What to check 1 |
| Time 2 | Plan 2 | Travel / pause 2 | What to check 2 |
| Time 3 | Plan 3 | Travel / pause 3 | What to check 3 |

Before you go
- Have you noted the official information and the date checked?
- Have you checked reservations, tickets and admission conditions?
- Have you checked your last connection and way home?
- Does your budget leave room for transport, admission and food or drinks?
- Do you know what to drop if weather, queues or closures change the plan?
